San Francisco, California) A plan to ask voters to approve a ban on handguns in San Francisco has angered a gay firearms club.
In the past year San Francisco has seen a 28 percent increase in homicides during the past year. In response, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has proposed putting a question on this year's ballot that would bar residents from keeping handguns in their homes or businesses.
If passed it also would prohibit the sale, manufacture and distribution of any firearms or ammunition in San Francisco.
Since 1996 city residents have bought nearly 22,000 handguns since 1996, according to the state attorney general's office.
The San Francisco Pink Pistols, a gay and lesbian gun-rights group, has joined other pro-gun groups in opposing the initiative.
The group, the Bay Area chapter of the national Pink Pistols group, said it is organizing a letter-writing campaign to the Board of Supervisors.
"Outlawing handguns would raise crime," he said. "A handgun is a very useful defensive tool," said SF Pink Pistols spokesperson Tom Boyer.
Only two other major U.S. cities - Washington, D.C., and Chicago - have implemented handgun bans, and both were quickly challenged in the courts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the sudden increase in homicides start when the DA refused to go for the death penalty in a case where a cop was murdered? If so, it sent a clear message to bad guys that any & everyone is fair game.

It's ALWAYS the fault of non-feeling, non-thinking INANIMATE objects that dictate people's actions. EVERYONE knows that. People are NEVER at fault for ANYTHING.... well... a FEW people of .... well... certain political affiliations .... POSSIBLY.... <sarcasm off> (And specific political groups I didn't include ON PURPOSE as they pretty much ALL do that BS, even though they each TEND to blame different groups/ people/ inanimate objects.

d**n those inanimate object! d**n them and ban them too! It's probably good there are no lobby organizations for the criminal class...no doubt they would be pouring lots of money (from stolen silverware no doubt) into the passage of this law. It should be called the "Protection for the common criminal" law. How indignant a mugger must be when confronted by a gun wielding victim! How dare victims protect themselves! It's downright un-American!

This will invariably cause a drop in tourism. I know I've wanted to vacation in SF for some tiime now... however, if this ban goes through, they couldn't pay ME to visit there! Probably by the end of the day, if not sooner I should have the beginings of a plan regarding this I'll post it in the Activism forum. Just trying to coordinate this w/the PP in SF since they are taking the point on this matter.

You mean like this? AB352Yeah that passed. Even if we win this ban, we cannot fight the state assembly. They work for themselves. The people are ignored as a rule. The good fight is all but lost here. Something wicked this way comes...
