Compulsive,
You are NOT THINKING here with your statements.
You CAN NOT fire in self defense unless you are justified in using deadly force.
IF you have to use deadly force you don't fire warning shots or fire to wound, you ONLY fire for effect at center of mass.
I SUGGESTED looking at the Box of Truth in a post above, I have read it.
The whole description of a self-defense encounter that you give in your first paragraph is TOTALLY BOGUS! If you are thinking this way, DON'T use a firearm for self defense, you are going to be an IDIOT POSTER BOY for the ANTI-SELF-DEFENSE SIDE!

Hello again. First of all I want to apologize to Stetson. I unintentionally moved this thread in a different direction. I think I should have put my last couple of threads on the General Firearm board. I have a tendency to ramble and get away from the subject. Secondly, I really appreciate the sound advice I have gotten here. There doesn't seem to be as much commando-Rambo want to be- BS on this site as on others. In fact everyone on this site appears to be able to exhibit self restraint and use common sense even when they disagree. You won't find that many places. I hope we don't let this site go to waste. Last but not least I wanted to reply to some of the questions Cougar, Kacer, and Buckshot had. If anyone needs to move this thread to another part of the board I completely understand. Like I said I ramble. Cougar, Thanks for the advice on ammo. I have 20 rounds of Corbon 165 gr JHP for my 40 S&W. I also have 20 rounds of Federal Premium 124 grain Hydra-Shok JHP for my 9mm. I realized after reading your post I problably should have more. I have plenty of target ammo, but that I know that Hollow Points are best choice when overpenetration and innocent bystanders are factored in. I have two IWB holsters. They fit my 9mm Glock and my 40 S&W. I have my CCW. I don't carry very often because I still have an accuracy (flinch) problem I feel I should work through. Yes, I have a safe. It is small, but I can't afford a large one now. What are some other good alternatives? I have heard of large lockboxes that slide under the bed. I don't know anyone that has one. Kim, I have signed up for email from the Pink Pistol Louisville, KY chapter, but I don't know Steve. I will try to go to the site later today and find out more. Thanks for the connection. Buckshot, I do have a .22 pistol and it is my #1 training tool. I have done the ball and dummy drills with a revolver. I didn't know you could these drills with a semi auto. Great advice. Thanks, I will give it a try. My flinch is improving. I was using a large silhoutte target at 7 yards and still having a few miss the paper completely. Now I use small bulleyes and get most within 3 or 4 inches of center. Not great, but a vast improvement. I have taken a couple of training classes and that helped a lot.

Shhh Sapphic, don't mention over penetration or our in house Rambo-commando Buckshot will go nuts. He thinks anything short of a howitzer and total annihilation of a BG is a waste of time. So please keep it down before we have the poor guy spinning in a circle, waving his arms and spitting nonsensical utterances. ;D Yah, I know, it might be to late.

Compulsive,
"Know your target and what is beyond it."
Every heard that one before?
Hardly Rambo, he never got enough hits to satisfy me for all the ammo he fired.
Can't remember the name of the movie, POW rescue movie starring Gene Hackman and Jan Michael Vincent. Gene Hackman and his spotter taking out VC/Pathet Lao, Kemr Rouge, whatever with rifle fire from an M1 Garand. Spotter: "up from the vehicle, 2:00 O'clock behind the clump of vines". Hackman "Boom, Boom". Spotter: "Hit, next target, left 200, up 100"!
That is more my style.
Iron sights and all.
The shooters I grew up with in Ohio wanted the Kent State Guardsmen Court Martialed for total lack of marksmanship. They thought there should have been MANY more hits for the number of rounds fired!

Sapphic,
It will work fine with a semi-auto.
You have to have a helper load it, though, and you will only get the dummy in the first round in a string, because I have NEVER seen a .22 LR semi-auto that would feed an empty case.
Make it easy on yourself, use a case you fired out of your pistol!

Regarding the accesories that I recomended to Sapphic,I just want to add that you need not go and buy extra ammo, etc. all at once. Just add items as you have the time and money. Whenever you are buying firearms and related items, always consider what "battle" you are preparing for and remember that firearms are only part of our overall preparations for safe existence in this world. Years ago I purchased, and still have it somewhere around the house, a book by gun writer Massad Ayoob. IIRC, it's title is "The Truth About Self Defense". He discusses a broad range of topics. I know he has received some criticism among the firearms community, though I don't know exactly why. But I do feel that that book helped me consider the wide range of circumstances and dangers that people might face. You might look around for a copy of it, perhaps even in a public library.

Geezz Buckshot, I'm glad you weren't at Kent State. Ever think maybe the guardsmen were trying to miss? Ever consider that frightening someone so bad might make them stop doing the evil deed or never come back to the defended home? Have you ever considered that not firing a shot and stopping a crime anyway might be a better solution than "firing for effect" or "shooting to kill"? Warning shots, or just the presents of a firearm will usually stop a crime cold. Protection doesn't always mean blasting someone into oblivion, does it? "Firing for effect", "Shoot to kill" sounds like Rambo is alive and well even if you aaa he doesn't have a great shot to hit ratio. ^ ^ Hah, a shrugging smiley face!
