I will put forth that the three standard defensive shotguns are as follows:
Modern: Remington 870
Classic: Winchester M1897
Don't ignore: Side by side "Coach Gun"
Make any of mine in 12 ga.
What say you?

SS,
Just can't see the need for the self-shuckers here.
Don't want the added complexity and BS involved either.

Buckshot I 've never had a problem with the Benelli that didn't come back to low powered ammo. I've run it in matches for the last couple years and it does quite well. The only real issue I have with it is it doesn't take a detachable mag.

SS,
I have never shot the Benelli. Never shot a Rem 11/87 or the Mossberg Jungle gun either. Last semi-auto I shot was a Rem 1100 12 ga. trap back before the 11/87 was even introduced.
Just didn't like all the stuff to dink with to get it to work. 870 operation much simpler than loading mag then hitting lever to charge and all that stuff.
Then they got into off the wall stuff like the old SPAS. Too many operating methods, too many controls, some of them redundant and some very counter-intuitive.
Very seldom shoot trap, have been run off the trap range and told to go back to the rifle range where I know what I am doing.
One of my few good rounds of trap was fired with my Stoger/IGA Coach Gun 12 ga. 20" barrels, IC and MOD. Used the MOD barrel and got 15 out of 25 birds. Took a lot of crap about "where did you leave the other half of your shotgun" and that kind of thing. Best think to do about that is to shoot right beside the guy making all the snide comments the next time out. Short barreled shotgun on the trap range is just like shooting next to an obnoxious muzzle brake on the rifle range!
Most of what shotgunning I do, except for a small trip into cowboy shooting, is done with buckshot or slugs.
The 870 is the bulletproof pump for serious use. The old M1897 Winchester is the nostalgia gun and "shot hose" when you get mad and hold the trigger down!
The side by side is fun and will "make the perp's eyeballs enlarge" when used in a serious manner. Something about that large sideways figure 8 just seems to do it. Buckshot

The matches I shoot are "tactical" with steel targets Their pretty much 20rd run and guns with four shooting positions and reloads under time. We have to get together and shoot the Super 90 it's a blast ;D

Kacer, I like the simple stuff too. I use a 12 GA Winchester Defender made in New Haven, Conn. I know this cause it's stamped on the barrel. I did extend the ammo tube to hold seven rounds and installed a pistol grip to shorten the whole thing. I'd sure like to try this thing out at an IDPA shoot just for fun. I'm still waiting for them to process my membership so I'm not going to ask. I figure once I'm a member, they won't boot me out for asking a dumb question.

SS,
I would like to get together sometime and shoot the Benelli.
Not too much for "running and gunning, though. I don't run worth a d**n any more, have not run in years.
We shoot MPPC and IDPA matches but very little movement is permitted.

the winchester 1300 defender is a good platform. the action unlocks very quickly after firing, and follow up shots are quite rapid.
i kept the synthetic stock on it, not too hip on the pistol grips since i like to run a lot of magnum loads, and dont want to inflict too much pain on my wrists.

spacemanspiff,
I stay away from the Winchester 1300 shotguns because of the number of them I have fixed over the years.
There is a plate screwed to the bottom of the bolt (IIRC, it is either the connection to the operating slide or part of the locking system) with a very small screw.
I have fixed at least 5 of these. The little screw breaks, usually with part of the screw in the bolt. They shear off.
Then they have to be drilled out of the bolt and replaced. I always used a much bigger screw, a #8 screw when the original was probably a #4 or #5 screw, definitely smaller than a #6 screw.
The original screw had to be carefully drilled out and then re-threaded. That forces a replacement screw as drilling out the part in the bolt wrecks the factory threads. Then the plate has to be drilled out larger and re-counter-sunk.
My favorite, the Remington 870 does NOT have a small weak link like this one, that is why it is my favorite and the #1 shotgun used by US police.
