Who is into double action revolvers? Why?
Single action semi-autos?
Double/Single semi-autos? Safety or not?
DAO semi-auto? Safety or not?
Any other kind of semi-auto?
Single shots, derringers or?
Why?
Lets get some discussion going here.

Well I'm easy....I like them all
Pistols :1911A1 45acp of course, fits my hand perfectly and is like a clean canvas just waiting to be made a personnel masterpiece!!!!
But I must say if I was going to war, my pick would be the Glock 17...simple because it just works

SS,
Agree with your M1911A1 idea.
Can't really get along with your combat tupperware ideas, though. Especially not in the small calibers.

Well 9mm maybe small but it is alot easier to get out side the US. And like I said for a War pistol if I'm down to a handgun, I want one that holds as many bullets as I can.

SS,
I can't be sent out of the US on duty, matter of fact, IN, MI, PA, WV & KY are as far as I can be sent, along with Ohio, so the out-of-the-country argument doesn't fly for me.
Much more likely to get into a civilian engagement than an "on duty, Martial Law (OCMJ) situation".

I like the Glock 21.
I selected Glock because I like its "safe action system" with the external trigger safety and the internal drop safety and internal firing pin safety. As long as the trigger guard is covered, it is safe to carry with a chambered round, and if I must draw in a stress situation, pulling the trigger releases all safeties, no need to think about flipping any levers.
I selected the 21 because I like the .45ACP cartridge---it's the all-time classic.

If it's chambered for .45 or .357 I'm a fan; though my extended experience is with the G21, various 1911's, and the HK USP frame.
SA/DA revolvers? Lovely fun at the range, but the only one I carry is my 649 (I hate hammer spur snag on a civilian CC firearm). YMMV, of course. Handloads in my Super Redhawk make poppers at 100yds great fun, especially when the range is as 11,000ft above sea level!
Derringers are loads of fun - I gravitate to the larger calibers (but I refuse to shoot a 45/70!).
Hmmm. . . I guess that means I love diversity. I get to select both the firearm and the carry rig to match the weather and the occasion - and still have a BUG.
Life is good!

Trisha,
Sounds like you have same kind of depth for selection that I have.
My favorites are an S&W 640-1 .357, S&W M65 .357, Ruger KP90 and my old M1911 clone built out of parts on a commercial frame.
Of the 4 listed above, you will usually find me carrying ithe 640-1. The .45s are usually limited to "I wish I could carry a rifle there" kinds of situations.
There have also been a couple of times when I was carrying with regard to animals as much as humans that a 5 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag felt good in an IWB holster.

For handguns, I've always preferred semi-autos (probably the gadget geek in me) First one was a S&W 459 (second generation 9mm, 15 round mag); a buddy had a 39 (first gen, single stack) and I liked it. Now that my eyes are old, I don't care for this pistol as much ... it's hard to make out the sights (a fixable problem, but not yet fixed) I bought a Colt Gold Cup .45 a number of years ago, and really like that, and then bought a Para-Ordnance P-12 (double stack .45, 12 round mag) as my carry weapon. No centerfire rifles yet, but I'd probably start out with a M-1 Garand from www.odcmp.com ... my dad was a Marine in Korea, and that's what he would have trained with, and possibly carried over there (he was artillery, and an officer, so I don't know if he had a rifle) When I hit the lottery, I want a Steyr Scout, and an Alaskan Copilot ;D

Uhm... hello... my name is Chris (muted voices "Hi Chris!) and... and... I'm a Smith & Wesson revolver junky. I've been using S&Ws since... *sniff* uhm.. 1988. And I don't think I can stop. First it was J-frames... anything; Chief's Specials, .32's, .22's. It didn't matter. Then it was N-frames; the bigger the better. Lew Horton Classic Hunter .44's; Texas Ranger special edition .45LC's... Dirty Harry stuff. I know I can stop anytime I want to. Really. I can. Hey! Is that a M24? I don't have one of those!

Skydaver,
A Marine Infantry offier is likely to have carried an M2 Carbine in Korea.
A Marine Artillery officer is most likely to have carried an M1911A1 pistol with an M2 Carbine or maybe a Thompson or an M1 Garand handy.
My Dad was AA Artillery in Korea. Buck Sgt. Director computer mechanic on 90mm AAA cannon. Issued an M2 Carbine. Carried a privately owned S&W Military and Police 2" 6 shot .38 Special in a shoulder holster too.

Chris,
I did quit on the S&Ws after their deal with the Clintonistas.
My last 2 were a 640-1 and a 60-9, both in .357 Mag. right after they came out and before they made their deal with USHUD.
Might buy from them again now that they have denounced it, if I had any spare cash.
