I've been wanting an AR-180 forever and a day. Accurate, light, not an AR-15 and has a side folding stock. I've got a few questions however.
1.I've heard back and fourth that they do/do not need special mags. Do they take AR-15 mags or what?
2.Have one? Is it easy to clean?
3.What'd you pay for yours out the door?
4. Anything ya DONT like about the rifle?
Feedback -please-?

I had one back before the 94...a Costa Mesa AR180. Anyway this is some of the answers, but Buckshot can fill in anything I missed. 1. yes the old ones take special mags, but you can modifiy AR15 mags to work. I have one that I moded so I can show you want you would need to do. Basicly you need to cut a new mag catch slot in the body. 2. yes it's easy to clean, for one thing it doesn't poop where it eats [piston vs gas tube] 3. about 800 before then ban 4. I loved the rifle and wished I had not sold it Also the new AR180B takes regular AR15 mags and has a polymer lower reciever...but a non folding stock. Buckshot and I are hoping Armalite goes back to the folder now that the 94 is gone.

Armalite announced, no go for the folding stock. ACE is making one though. Anyway if I buy a new AR-180 then can it eat AR-180 mags and NATO m16 mags then?
I'd be buying new here, I just see the justification for 800 bucks. I could build a DSA fal on my own receiver for that much scratch.

Kace,
I don't think the $800.00 was for one of the AR180Bs, that was the value SS had on his Costs Mesa.
Last I read (I did not go check their web site) the MSRP of the AR180B was only something like $695.00. You should be able to get one to you (shipping) and pay the tax on it (sales tax) and any transfer fee and come out at $700.00 or you need to find another dealer!
I paid (right at the start of the AW Ban, so '94) $650.00 for my Howa used at a gun shop. That was OTD they either ate or paid or whatever, the sales tax. It had one factory mag with it, and 4 (semi) converted AR15 mags with it, plus a scope (no factory mount, they drilled and tapped 4 holes in the upper and mounted milled off Ironsighter scope rings, all now removed and holes filled with plug screws) and some sick looking reloads.
I don't think the AR180B will use the original AR180 mags, but they you don't want to mess with them anyway, they are 3X to 5X the price of AR15 mags! The AR180B lower fit for AR15 mags is one of the GREAT features of the B model.

Like StonerStudent said, the original AR180s used proprietary magazines. Yes, you can modify AR15 mags to work, but this isn't always the best option due to reliability issues that may arise. Original AR180 mags (at least those manufactured by Sterling) are easily $70 or more and pretty rare. Prices tend to vary quite a bit on original AR180s depending on the maker. I see Sterling AR180s in the $900 range pretty regularly whereas the Costa Mesas and Howas tend to be a bit higher. My dad has had a Sterling model since the '70's (or maybe '80 or so), and I've shot it quite a bit in the past. Reliability isn't that great with the flimsy factory 20-rounder, nor aftermarket 40-rounders. Although it doesn't have the folding stock, if I were in the market for one right now, I'd pick up the new 180B over an original 180. ArmaLite was on the ball when they redesigned it to use readily available standard AR15 fire control parts and magazines. This alone puts the B model ahead of the original in my book. Don't forget to checkout the Unofficial AR18/180 Web Site. <<< Well crap, the website's down now...

Bulldawg,
Yahoo killed the AR180B website for lack of traffic.

Bulldawg, Yahoo killed the AR180B website for lack of traffic. Buckshot How can Yahoo kill a website like that? Hell, my website probably gets very little traffic, yet it's still up & running just fine. As far as I know, the AR180 site wasn't even a Yahoo-hosted website (like my website). Anyway, here's another one I just ran across: AR-180.com

Bulldawg, Maybe you and I are not talking about the same thing. This was through www.yahoogroups.comThere was a mailing list, discussion board, listserver, however you chose to use it, thing for the AR180B. The guy that started it got one, had some trouble with it (one of the first batch released) pitched into getting it fixed and got on with shooting it. He got tired of the group, which only had 20 or so members, and the use of the list just died out. Yahoo has warnings posted when you start a group, no use for 90 days will put it on "probation" and 60 or 90 more idle and they will kill it. When he tried to pass the ownership to someone else on the list I was the only one that even answered in the negative! Everyone else had all ready bailed out. I guess this is NOT what you were talking about? Buckshot

Yeah, different thing. The first link I posted was to the privately hosted "Unofficial AR18/AR180 Website" that's been around for a few years. It was up just a few days ago, but after I posted the link, I noticed it was down.
