I went with a Mossberg 500 Persuader in 12ga. Got the 20inch barrel, which gives an extra (7 total) round in the tube. I chose the Mossberg over the Remington 870 because of price and availability here in town, and based on what I read here: members.tripod.com/~jth8260/870.htmlI'm a complete shotgun neophyte, so don't take my opinion as anything more than just a single data point.

My first 870 was a used police riot gun. Let a buddy talk me out of it.
Then I went for an 870 Express 12 ga. 20" rifle sight smoothbore deer barrel. Had a 28" modified barrel I got a deal on left from the previous 870 and I added a 20" rifle sight fully rifled deer barrel so far.
There is a reason the 870 is the #1 police issue shotgun in the nation, it is robustness and reliabiility.
The Stoger/IGA is a Coach Gun 20" barrels choked IC & M. Got it for Cowboy shooting. Can really freak people out though, NYC used them for years for their detectives.
The most fun for blasting, though, is the M1897. NO DISCONNECTOR! Hold down the trigger and PUMP!

Any word on the Nova? Always wanted one. Good bad, freaky? Nova?.....Glock makes that, don't they? LOL sorry Kace.......I really never heard anything bad about the Nova. It just seems a little light for a 12ga, plus I'm a big believer in the sidesaddle ammo carrier and the Nova doen't look like one would work.

second the comment about the nova being light for a 12 guage. not bad if you're shooting target loads, but i wouldnt dream of putting some magnum loads through it.
not to mention that its capacity is rather low. think the best you can do is 6+1 after putting on a +2 extension, right?

I thought it was 8+1?

could be....all i know is that i couldnt fit too many 3 inch shells into one. think that might have been 4+1. and up here, if you are out traipsing through the woods, i'd want as many 3 inch magnum buckshot and slugs loaded into my shottie as humanly possible. think my winchester holds 6+1 3 inch shells.

I was going to ask a silly question...why 3inch shell. Then I remmebered......Alaska land of LARGE woodland creatures
