I probably won't be back much, as I tend to hang out over on The High Road, but I just learned of this board, and wanted to wish the founders and participants every success.
My userid here is the same as on thehighroad, so if anyone is in central NC, or visiting, send me a PM or email, and we can go shooting.

I went with a Mossberg 500 Persuader in 12ga. Got the 20inch barrel, which gives an extra (7 total) round in the tube. I chose the Mossberg over the Remington 870 because of price and availability here in town, and based on what I read here: members.tripod.com/~jth8260/870.htmlI'm a complete shotgun neophyte, so don't take my opinion as anything more than just a single data point.

Buckshot, thanks for the info on what the Marine officers probably carried ... sadly, I'm almost 25 years too late to ask him directly. He passed away before I had a chance to grow up enough.
I've got a couple of 1911 style, so I'll just have to get a military 1911, an M-1 carbine, and an M-1 Garand to cover all the bases ;D

For handguns, I've always preferred semi-autos (probably the gadget geek in me) First one was a S&W 459 (second generation 9mm, 15 round mag); a buddy had a 39 (first gen, single stack) and I liked it. Now that my eyes are old, I don't care for this pistol as much ... it's hard to make out the sights (a fixable problem, but not yet fixed) I bought a Colt Gold Cup .45 a number of years ago, and really like that, and then bought a Para-Ordnance P-12 (double stack .45, 12 round mag) as my carry weapon. No centerfire rifles yet, but I'd probably start out with a M-1 Garand from www.odcmp.com ... my dad was a Marine in Korea, and that's what he would have trained with, and possibly carried over there (he was artillery, and an officer, so I don't know if he had a rifle) When I hit the lottery, I want a Steyr Scout, and an Alaskan Copilot ;D
