TC makes interchangeable barrels for the encore. I can order a 7X57, a 12 gage shotgun and maybe a 22 or 223 or 30-30 or ....
Oh and a butt pad or two. ouch

I do, carry a pistol/revolver quickly accessed for self protection. The rifle I was talking about was for a survival situation. Here in Colorado bears and mountain lions are more a problem than two legged critters.
I ran across another hiker while at a mountain lake in the area of St. Mary's Glacier. He made the comment that having a small dog with me would likely cause a bear to attack my pet before it attacked me. I didn't tell the guy that if a bear or lion attacked me or my dog the first bullet would go up the critters ass, the second shot would go down it's throat and the third would be a toss between the head and the heart.
44 mags do lots of damage at close range.

Cougar, I'm the kind of person who might get everything I need for an extended hike in a small trailer. Small trailers are tough to pull around especially up mountain trails. Most hiking I do is in the category of the day or the short quick type of hiking. I usually never use large (goat) packs for hiking so a small light break down rifle is what I'm after. I think a couple of companies make lite, short, plastic rifles in the calibers you mentioned.
Buckshot, I'll take a look at the M4s and I didn't know they broke down that way.
I guess I could always set my encore up as a 30-30 pistol, ouch.

OMG! Very nice rifle, but the price, ouch! I hope the ported barrel really really helps with the recoil.
I also ran across some double barreled shot guns that might be worth a look see.
Unfortunately the mountains of Colorado are tinder dry. Camping or any other activity could lead to the start of another forest fire so I'm staying put in the city for the time.

I have also thought about the Thompson Center Encore/Omaga rifle. I don't think they have a shot gun barrel but the exchange barrels offer some good choices.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll take a look around the gun shops in the area.

Does anyone have experience or preference on a particular rifle used for backpacking or camping?
I'm after something that breaks down into two or three pieces that can be carried in a backpack. I also don't care about the caliber, but the more versatile the better.
Thanks

Ya, all calibers can kill, but the question is how fast! Does the bg get a chance to shoot back or not. Anyway, I love the pics. Yo Buckshot, what kind of program can I get and will it run on an old Pentium 2, 300 MHz lap top? Please don't tell me to up grade. I like waiting forever for this old thing change pages or down load pics.

After reading this, I'm glad I'm a guy, mostly. I really never thought about or realized the problems facing woman for concealed carry. Dare I say, hopefully without being slammed, that wearing pants has an up side. Ankle holsters work well, are easy to get to and you can pull the pant leg up over the firearm to expose it while driving. Of course, dropping to my knees is a natural move so maybe thats why I'm partial to ankle holsters. Oh boy!

Has anyone ever owned a Glock36? Most people that I've talked to like them and said their very accurate and of course extremely reliable. The G36 is a single stack and has a smaller hand grip than regular Glocks. I think I'll rent one and see if I like it more than the XD. I found out that some of the XD parts are only available at Springfield. If the extractor breaks, the gun must be sent back to Springfield for repair because Springfield will not sell extractors. I should of stayed with Glock! Maybe it's time to trade in the XD on a G36.

The Wilson mag works well and fixed the feed problem. I also picked up a Springfield XD which has a smaller grip and is supposedly as reliable as a glock. Hope that's so because the thing is fun to shoot. The best and worst part is that I went only to shoot at the range and then only decided to look at the new Ruger 44mag with the 4 inch barrel. For some blasted reason they didn't have one, next thing I knew I was getting the Springfield. Guess I can use it for a camp gun.

I'll check them both out. I finally have some down time so I need to get to the range and do some shooting.

I'm having some feed problems when I load up the mag with 7 rounds, but only for the first round. If I use 6 rounds the problem goes away. Maybe I should look into getting some Wilson Combat mags instead.

Got another new toy and ccw gun today. I picked up a Kimber Eclipse Ultra II and with any luck I'll get to start breaking it in real soon. The one thing I can't get over with Kimber, however, is their annoying habit of including only one magazine with each firearm. For what people pay for their pistols you would think Kimber would at least include a second mag.
